Colm had been wanting to ride beach bikes, so he and Sean went and did that while Liam and I went and explored the sea life at Haystack Rock.

(Project 365-8/30/10)
There was a nature conservancy group there with binoculars and telescopes so that you could look at the birds way up on top of Haystack Rock. There are SOOOO many birds that nest there!
Sean has some really great pictures on his camera of the boys flying kites that I will hopefully get up soon too. I don’t know about most beaches, but Oregon beaches are WINDY and a fantastic place to fly a kite.

Hey, it’s hard work, but somebody’s gotta do it!

(Project 365-8/29/10)

They never did really finish their sand castle and then the tide came in and washed it all away…all that hard work.

We went on our first Oregon family vacation this week to Cannon Beach.

Haystack Rock

Our kids and a bunch of other kids digging a very deep hole in the sand.

Digging in the sand and getting his toes wet.

Someone gave the kids a metal detector.

Colm got his new violin today! Yes, he used to play the cello and before that he played the violin and now we are starting over. Long story short…he started the violin when he wasn’t quite ready, then he decided to play the cello a few years later, but then we moved and finding a cello teacher became an impossible task, so now we are back to violin. Let’s hope it sticks this time.

Colm was sad that Liam was at a friend’s house and he didn’t have anyone to play with, so I took him up to the school where I knew there would be tons of kids because enrollment was going on. Sure enough, it took about five minutes for the boys there to organize a game of basketball. Colm was probably the second youngest kid playing, but he hung in there (and how they managed to play when at least half of them were wearing flip-flops I have no idea).

I took the boys up to school today to find out who their teachers will be for this year. Liam gets to loop with his teacher, so he is very excited about that.

The boys made their own homemade macaroni and cheese for lunch. They did a great job!
(This is the part where I leave out that it wasn’t until after Liam put the cheese in and it had already started to melt that I noticed that the cheese was moldy. I fished around in the pot and I think I got it all out.)

I love it when we come home from the library and they have a ton of new books to read. They dump them all in the middle of the family room and dive right in. They must have picked out some good ones this week because they were super quiet for quite a while.

We went hiking today at the Arboretum. It was kind of a cloudy day, so we didn’t get to see the spectacular views that you can normally see, but we still had a nice little hike.

Here we are taking a rest. Colm felt the need to stop at just about every bench we came across so he could get a drink and rest his poor weary legs.

We have an awesome farmers market and we had a great time sharing it with Grandma and Granddad. There were lots of samples to be had as well as scones, blackberries, blueberries, some locally made fruit soda, cheese, jam and bread to be purchased.
