I took the boys to see the play The Chronicles of Narnia at Theater for Young America at Union Station this week. They boiled the book down into a 45 minute play, but it was enough to get the gist of the story. Then we went to go see the Narnia Exhibit that was also at Union Station. The boys really liked it. You go into the wardrobe, through the coats and you step out the other side and it’s snowing and you’re in Narnia. Very cool. They don’t let you take pictures though. Sorry. Then we went and explored Science City.

Colm was too scared to be in this picture. I can’t say that I blame him.

Colm was too short to put his face in the holes, so he took the pictures.

This was not the wedding they had planned, but sometimes Uncle Sam makes other plans for you. John will be leaving for Afghanistan next month and will return August 2010. Many prayers for his safe return would be greatly appreciated. John is Sean’s cousin and Liam’s godfather.

This is the book that the first through third graders are reading for our first meeting of the neighborhood book club. It is a cute little story about a kid who is kind of lazy, but gets inspired to work very hard to earn a spot as his team’s goalie.

I picked this book off the “recommended” shelf at the library. It’s definitely not a book I would normally read. If you like football or know anything about football you might appreciate it a little bit more.

Yesterday I got Colm two pairs of pants for school in the fall and Liam two new pairs of pajamas for 21 bucks and some change at The Children’s Place which I think is a pretty good deal since, in my opinion, kids’ pajamas are usually freakishly expensive. Then tonight we went on a shopping rampage getting the boys clothes for a wedding tomorrow. I got Colm a white dress shirt for less than three dollars at Target and then I went to Kohl’s and got Colm some dress shoes, both the boys a tie and a Slip ‘n’ Slide (hey, it was 50% off) for less than forty dollars with the 20% off coupon the nice lady behind me in line shared with me combined with the sales they already had going on. Not too bad.

Liam was having a lot of hives back towards mid-May and the end of school. I took him to the pediatrician and they said don’t worry about it unless the hives continue for six weeks. Well, they didn’t continue because I think I figured out was causing the hives. Every time he wore these certain pajamas he would get hives around his waist and then they would spread to his legs, neck, wrists, etc. So, we took away the pajamas and the hives went away. Then we went on vacation and the place where we were staying had these big inner tubes the kids could float around in. He hung around on that thing all evening and his armpits swelled up like mad from where he had been hanging on it. When I told the doctor my suspicions this morning he concurred…latex allergy. That’s not good, people. It can be as bad as a peanut allergy and the more you’re exposed to it, the worse the reaction can become and it isn’t something you grow out of. We are going to the allergist next week.

Oh, and to top it all off, the pediatrician also said he doesn’t think the meds Liam is taking for his asthma aren’t strong enough, so we have to talk to the allergist about that, too. I am a little down today. It makes me so sad for Liam. I just want him to be a strong, healthy, happy boy. I know there could be MANY more severe things wrong with him and I count my blessings every day, but I’m still a little sad. Maybe the allergist will have some good news for us…

The boys had their Vacation Bible School program tonight. They both did a great job and they both definitely enjoyed the cookies and lemonade afterwards.

I tutored my first students of the summer today. I love tutoring during the summer. It is much more relaxed than tutoring during the school year and I can usually do what I want with the kids as opposed to helping them with their homework all the time. Another great thing that came out of tutoring today is that a mom saw me tutoring and asked if I would tutor her child as well. Sure, add another one to the mix…the more the merrier. 🙂

Time to check out and head home. We stopped by Fantastic Caverns in Springfield on the way home. I took some pictures, but they don’t really capture the feeling of being in a cave.

The caverns have a really neat history. A man stumbled across these caves right before the Civil War after his dog chased a squirrel into them. They were first officially explored by twelve women shortly after the Civil War and there was even a speak easy in the caverns during Prohibition.
