The first grade has been studying all things polar…especially penguins. They each did a pretty comprehensive study on these cute little creatures. I was quite impressed with the effort that went into all of their written work, but all of that written work doesn’t make as cute of a picture as these little guys do.

It makes it very difficult for me to get the kids to school on time when I pull out of our street and am met with this…
Clearly, Colm has way TOO many toothbrushes. He only has one set of teeth, so why does he have so many toothbrushes? Santa brought him one and I buy them new ones a few times a year and then they get one from the dentist each time they go and a dentist came to Colm’s class recently and brought them each a toothbrush so….they are starting to add up.
This is Liam’s first completed project from the art class he has been taking on Saturday mornings. Their assignment was to draw a treehouse. It was neat seeing how different each of the students’ drawings were. Some of the trees were falls trees, some were summer trees…some had very few leaves, some had lots of leaves. The tree houses were all very different, too. Very fun.
Somebody’s helping out with the grocery list.
Colm has discovered the world of Silly Bandz. We managed to steer clear of them when they were REALLY popular, but it was only a matter of time before Colm realized he wanted some and that they were something he could afford. So he bought some with his allowance this week and then quickly had buyer’s remorse when he realized that it was kind of pointless to have them since they can’t wear them to school. Sometimes he remembers to put them on at home, but it’s not much fun to have them on at home where there’s no one to trade with.
While the boys were at school today I went and helped sort and hang up clothes at our school district’s clothes closet. Families get vouchers from their children’s schools that verify that they have children who live within the district’s boundaries and then they can come “shop” at the clothes closet. The parent can pick out ten items per child two times during the school year. There is everything from socks to backpacks to underwear to jeans and they carry sizes 4T-18. I was able to actually help in the shop area for a while today and was so moved by a boy who came in by himself with his voucher. He was a senior in high school and came in to get some jeans. He told me his size and we searched all over the store and I even went into the sorting room to see if I could find his size. Nothing. I was so sad. We gave him back his voucher and told him to try back later. I would have given him the jeans I had on if I thought they would have fit him. Poor kid.
When we first moved here a dear, dear friend of mine who lives in Seattle said I MUST visit Queen Bee Creations. I was in need of a new purse anyways (how convenient, I know) and I was already in that part of town, so I thought I would swing by and check things out. It was a hard decision, but this is what I ended up leaving with.
I really liked the ones they had with the birds on them, but if you’ve ever watched Portlandia, you know why I couldn’t by any of the bird ones.
The husband of one of Liam’s Sunday school teachers traveled to Jerusalem recently and brought back rosary beads for each of the children in Liam’s class. I just thought that was so thoughtful.
Our sweet pup is such a help in the kitchen. He loves to help clean up after dinner. Here he is licking a spatula clean for me. The spatula used to be in the place where you put dirty silverware, but he licked it so much it fell out and so now he is trying to “clean” it as it moves around the dishwasher door. Soon it will fall to the floor and he will lick it while moving around the floor where it might eventually end up on the carpet…this is a daily occurrence.
