Weeds

We started a Mother’s Day tradition last year of planting our garden on Mother’s Day. Last year we planted pumpkins, tomatoes, cantaloup, watermelon and carrots. The problems is, you see, that in between last fall and this spring our little garden plot turned into a mess of weeds…more than I could tackle on my own. So, I brought in the troops.

We still didn’t get rid of all the weeds today. It was hot and we didn’t have any water and Colm got sunscreen in his eye. BUT we did manage to get rid of all of the weeds except one small corner. Next weekend we are going to rent a tiller to break up the soil that is as hard as a rock and MAYBE, just maybe actually get some seeds planted in the ground.

What are we planting? I am so glad you asked. We are planting watermelon, radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots and strawberries this year. We are also working on getting some raised beds and/or some large pots at our house, too.

Another Broken Limb

Colm broke his left arm in November and now it’s Liam’s turn with a broken left arm.

Liam broke his arm at school playing basketball on the playground. He broke the two bones in his arm near his wrist. They had to move his arm back into place before they could put the splint on and then we had to go to another doctor a few days later to get the cast.
Since the cast is so big he got to pick two colors, so he chose black with a red stripe. Very cool.
He will need to wear this cast for another three weeks and then HOPEFULLY, if everything is healing up like it should be, he will get that cast off and get a smaller cast that only goes up to his elbow. That cast stays on for two weeks and then he should be done with casts. So hopefully by mid-June Liam will be cast free.

I liked this book. It takes place in Appalachia in the 1930′s and tells the story of a time and a place that I am not very familiar with…of poverty of the likes I have never seen, of a rich history of music, of hidden stills, of traveling preachers, of superstitions and of mysterious creatures that come out at night in the hills. The story slows down a little in the middle, but picks up again towards the end. I also loved the piece after the end of the story where the author explains where the story came from.

Fourth Grade Field Trip

I don’t usually go on field trips. The bus ride is usually loud and it makes me nervous to be in charge of other people’s children in an environment away from school where they could get lost, injured, etc. I decided to go on this field trip though because they were going to The Gorge and I had never been there before. I am SO glad I went. The kids were fantastic and the field trip was awesome.

Colm’s First Communion

The morning began with a family brunch and the opening of gifts.

Yes, that’s a First Communion trophy engraved with his name, the church’s name and the date. He loved it and it’s perfect because it’s a cup.

Good question. It’s because my website got infected and my dear, dear husband spent a long time redoing everything, but I have to choose a new header, but I can’t find one that I like. So until I do find one that I like you are stuck with the camel.

Opening Day

The boys had their first baseball game of the season last weekend. The weather was perfect and the boys did a great job.

The Hunger Games

I finally got around to reading The Hunger Games. It is a good read and I get what all of the hype is about, but I am going to wait until I read the next one. My dreams are getting weird. I think my brain needs a break.
