I let the boys each pick out a book yesterday on our trip to Reading Reptile. Liam pick out this one and Colm picked out this one…both were very good choices. I got a book while we were there, too. I thumbed through it last night and I am SO ready to get started on our culinary adventure.

Finding out who your teacher is going to be is so exciting. This year the school decided to e-mail the class lists out to parents before the ice cream social, but they also posted them on the windows outside like they have done in previous years. I knew which teachers they had and which kids were in their classrooms before they did from the e-mail that was sent out, but I thought it would be more fun for them to find their names on the list outside instead of me just telling them.
Today was our last big outing before school starts. Liam has been begging to go to Reading Reptile all summer, so today we made it happen. Of course we started the outing at Waldo Pizza, then we went to Reading Reptile, Brookside Toy and Science and then ended the trip with Baskin Robbins ice cream.

We went to go check out this free exhibit at the Johnson County Museum yesterday. The exhibit is an interactive neighborhood in suburbia with a park where the kids can play baseball on a Wii, golf and fish. There is a bead shop where they can make jewelry, a bookstore/library, a train shop, a theater complete with tons of dress-up clothes and a stage, a doctor office and a few other things I am probably forgetting. It reminded me a lot of the exhibits they have at Crown Center. Very interactive and a lot of fun…probably best for ages 3-5, but older and younger siblings will find things to do, too.

Sean and I had THE BEST mexican food we have EVER had this weekend. It was SOOOO good. Let me clarify…mine was okay, but Sean’s was awesome. He gave me one bite and I was more than willing to ditch the rest of mine and eat the rest of his. We had never been there before. Sean was smart and asked the waitress what she recommended. She told him to have chicken enchiladas with chile verde sauce and a fried egg over-medium on top. It was the egg that set this dish over the top. Go, get it, eat it…you can thank me later. Go here to check out the menu. Make sure you check out the hours they are open, too. They aren’t open all the time. Also, this is a teeny tiny restaurant and it fills up quickly. You need to be there at 5:00 when they open or be prepared to wait.
The boys went to The Nelson for art camp for a few hours each day last week. Colm’s class was called All about Animals and Liam’s was called Cats and Dogs. Each day they went into the galleries and looked at pieces of art that reflected what they were going to learn about and create that day. Liam REALLY liked the whole experience. Colm was a little miffed there wasn’t a snacktime.

Ancient Egyptian…they had learned that day about the role cats played in Ancient Egypt. He loves this hat and was so proud of it. He was totally bummed that he couldn’t fit in the car with it still on his head. 🙂

This was from Africa day. They had gone into the galleries and looked at how many of the masks and such from Africa resembled animals.

This a self-portrait of Liam holding our cat, Butch. He used water colors and oil pastels.
This past weekend we had the last book club of the summer for the kids in our neighborhood. The younger kids read Star Jumper: Jounal of a Cardboard Genius. It’s the story of a boy, his inventions and his annoying little brother who turns out to be an asset in the end. The older kids read Pictures of Hollis Woods. It is SUCH a good book and was the winner of the Newbery Award in 2007.

The boys have been begging to go to the batting cages for over a month now. We finally had time today and Sean found one that was pretty close and (bonus!) it was inside. It wasn’t too busy or expensive and the boys really liked it. You can choose from slow, medium or fast pitch and you get 15 pitches for a little under two dollars.
